Gods and Religion: Finding Hope in the Hopeless

The Nature of Faith in the Old World

In a world where daemons are real and Chaos Gods actively plot humanity's downfall, religion isn't just faithβ€”it's survival. The gods of the Old World are distant, demanding, and only occasionally helpful. Think of them as cosmic middle managers: they might help if you file the proper prayers in triplicate.

Divine Magic: Miracles with Fine Print

Unlike arcane magic that channels raw Chaos, divine magic channels the power of the gods. It's safer (usually), more reliable (sometimes), and comes with moral obligations (always). Think of priests as customer service representatives for deities.

Strictures: The Divine Terms of Service

Every god has rules. Break them, and you lose divine favor faster than you can say "heresy." These strictures aren't suggestionsβ€”they're cosmic employment contracts.

Divine Strictures (Sample) Sigmar's Strictures: β€’ Obey orders from Empire authorities β€’ Never refuse aid to citizens of the Empire β€’ Root out Chaos wherever found Shallya's Strictures: β€’ Never kill except in self-defense β€’ Always heal those who ask β€’ Never refuse mercy Ulric's Strictures: β€’ Face enemies head-on β€’ No gunpowder weapons β€’ Prove strength in combat Ranald's Strictures: β€’ One coin in ten to Ranald β€’ No violence against priests β€’ Always keep your word (sort of) Morr's Strictures: β€’ Ensure proper burial rites β€’ Destroy undead on sight β€’ Never disturb the dead Verena's Strictures: β€’ Seek truth in all things β€’ Never destroy knowledge β€’ Judge fairly and wisely Breaking Strictures Minor violation: -1 to Pray tests until penance Major violation: Cannot use Blessings until atonement Blasphemy: Lose all divine abilities, marked as apostate

Divine Intervention: When the Gods Actually Care

Sometimes, very rarely, the gods intervene directly. This usually happens at dramatically appropriate moments and always comes with a price.

Examples of Divine Intervention:

Playing a Religious Character

Tips for Faith-Based Characters:

  1. Choose your god wisely: Their strictures will define your character
  2. Faith is action: Don't just pray, live your faith
  3. Conflict is drama: Strictures create interesting dilemmas
  4. Doubt is human: Even priests question their faith
  5. Miracles are rare: Most prayers go unanswered
  6. Community matters: Find fellow believers (or convert them)
  7. Heresy is everywhere: Stay vigilant, stay paranoid

Religious Conflicts: When Gods Disagree

The gods don't always get along, and neither do their followers. Religious conflict provides excellent roleplaying opportunities and usually ends in someone being burned at the stake.

Common Religious Tensions:

"I prayed to Sigmar for strength, Shallya for healing,
Ranald for luck, and Morr for a peaceful death.
Only Morr answered."
